Abstract
Efficient Method to Evaluate the Tabletting Characteristics of a Powder Blend / Systematic Investigation of a Formulation Containing High-dose Ibuprofen und Low-dose Caffeine
In this case study, a simple and cheap method for characterising a tabletting blend with regard to its tabletting features is introduced and discussed. The results are intended to simplify the formulation and to optimise the process. A detailed evaluation of the tablets is the key for a successful application of the method and determining compactability, compressibility and bondability. Compactability describes the tablet’s tensile strength as a function of compression pressure. This functionality is indirect, though. Tensile strength directly depends on the efficiency of transferring compression pressure into solidification and bonds gained between the particles during solidification. Therefore, the introduction of porosity is essential in order to evaluate these two features. A systematic evaluation of the parameters compression pressure, tensile strength and porosity, accompanied by the determination of disintegration and uniformity of mass and content uniformity, allow a profound characterisation of a tabletting blend. This enabled a straight forward formulation and process optimisation.
