Degradation Kinetics of Arbutin in SolutionCéline Coiffard, Laurence J. M. Coiffard, and Yannick De Roeck-Holtzhauer Laboratory of Industrial Pharmacy (Head: Prof. Yannick De Roeck-Holtzhauer), School of Pharmacy, University of Nantes (France) The target of this research was to evaluate the stability of arbutin, a vegetable whitening and skin pigmentation- reducing agent with UV-filter and antioxidant properties. Thermodegradation of solutions of arbutin at different temperatures (50 to 90 °C) was studied. The degradation appeared to follow first-order kinetics whatever temperature. The experimentation revealed an activation energy of 76 kcal/mol and a t90% (time necessary to obtain a decrease of 10 % of the initial concentration) of 15.4 day s at 20 °C.
