Manfred Estler, ESB Business School, Hochschule Reutlingen, Alteburgstraße 150, 72762 Reutlingen (Germany) Overcoming Boundaries by “Production Intelligence” The pharmaceutical industry finds itself increasingly under the strain of serious structural change. The effects of this structural change will also influence the role of production areas in enterprises. Alongside existing high demands for quality and security, in the future there will be a stronger focus on efficiency and manufacturing costs. Additionally, all functional areas of an enterprise will have to concentrate more strongly on customer demands than before. Moreover, flexibility in production will also play a key role in measuring the ability to respond to the market. In order to achieve this goal of high flexibility, it is necessary to introduce a new and comprehensive concept into the production area. However, companies face a number of boundaries of different kinds that need to be overcome first. “Production Intelligence” presents us with a concept which can serve as a base for coping with imminent challenges. Production Intelligence utilizes and draws closely together a number of existing concepts and methods. It also defines the framework for a flexible and integrated information technology structure to implement resulting processes with lasting effect and to support their operational execution.
