Abstract
Health care research with herbal medicinal products - the pharmaco-epidemiological database PhytoVIS
Herbal medicinal products are an important part of the self-responsible basic supply of medicines in the context of pharmacy-supported self-medication. Findings on application experiences as well as on benefits and risks can be obtained using adequate health services research. However, there is a large lack of public or institutional interest in this. Particularly for risk groups such as pregnant women, children and patients with concomitant diseases, only little application data is available. In order to fill this gap, Kooperation Phytopharmaka, a scientific organization dedicated to the research and application of herbal medicinal products, has developed the PhytoVIS database together with the Institute for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Epidemiology at the University Hospital Cologne (IMSIE). In a first pharmaco-epidemiological phase, PhytoVIS has collected product- and indication-related application data on herbal medicinal products from more than 20 000 patients in pharmacies and medical practices. This data collection documents how patients perceive the benefits and risks of
self-medication with herbal medicinal products.
