Steam Injection Technology as Innovative Method for the Manufacture of Semisolid Preparations

Semi-solid preparations for cutaneous application are an essential group of pharmaceutical and cosmetical products. All these systems are physically unstable. An increased shelf live is usually achieved by optimization of the formulation. If variations in the composition are restricted, e.g. with homeopathic formulations, an alternative manufacturing process can
lead to a sufficiently stable product. In this context, steam-injection technology is an innovative issue. The set-up of an appropriate lab-scale processing unit is presented and the precision of the injected steam quantity is assessed. The results reveal that the steam amount is proportional to the injection time. For a given pressure-load and a controlled injection time, the amount of water which is introduced as steam is highly accurate and reproducible
