Abstract
Lean Production Systems in the pharmaceutical industry
Due to an increasingly dynamic and competitive market environment, small and medium-sized pharmaceutical enterprises in particular increasingly have to face the requirement to make their production more efficient. To achieve this, Lean Production Systems (GPS) have already proven to be a suitable approach in several industries. However, the actual implementation of GPS in the pharmaceutical industry is often characterized by project-based isolated solutions. Due to specific characteristics of pharmaceutical production as well as the basic conditions in small and medium-sized enterprises, the introduction of GPS is made more difficult. In the following, requirements for GPS for the pharmaceutical industry are determined and a suitable model developed, which can also be realized under the prevailing conditions in small and medium-sized enterprises. The validation of the model in three companies shows that there are still significant potentials for the implementation of GPS. In order to be able to make full use of these possibilities, it is necessary to accommodate the specific situation of a company.
