Control Systems for Pharma Packaging

Packaging of blisters, bottles, ampoules, cartons and tubes is an important step of the production of pharmaceuticals. Packaging mistakes, mix-up of printed matter and poor quality is responsible for 30-50 % of the drug recalls in Germany. This underlines, how important never ending attention in this sector may be (source: “PTA Heute” - recall statistics; 6. 4. 2001).
The variety of packaging material, the complex mechanical handling, incorporated design rules, a raising number of different products and the pressure of rationalising complicates safety systems in the pharmaceutical packaging area.
Manual checks are not any longer reliabel in the online packaging of blisters, cartons, ampoules, vials, syringes or tubes, etc. Automated control systems may be diverted in 3 areas: sensors, code reading systems and vision systems.
However, multiple control instruments at the various packaging lines have to find their way into complex security systems to safeguard the packaging process itself and to document the single control steps in the continuous packaging stream.
