A Hospital Pharmacyâs Quality Management Manual In Switzerland the new health insurance statute (KVG) requires the providers of health services to introduce measures of quality control. This paper presents an example of a process oriented quality management manual. It is intended to be used as a standard for the introduction of a quality system in hospital pharmacies. Given the perceived inflexibility of ISO 9000 and the complexity of hospital pharmacy services another more practicable system was developed. The twenty ISO-elements are incorporated into 25 hospital pharmacy specific processes. The system is based on continuous quality improvement (CQI), one of the most important aspects of quality control. The second part of the paper focusses on two rather unknown processes of hospital pharmacies. They show how the particular processes can exactly be described. This article should contribute to the establishment of the quality standards, to be issued by the Swiss Association for Quality in Healthcare. The longstanding experience in quality control of hospital pharmacies should flow into the new system.
