Abstract
Impact of varying means of communication of handling instructions for complex applicators on patients’ satisfaction
Complex applicators, especially if used with pharmaceutical products, are perceived as challenging devices by many patients. The present study examines the impact of varying means of communication of handling instructions for those products. Two pairs of inhalers and tablet dividers differing in complexity were examined combined with different means of communication of handling instructions based on a target group testing according to DIN EN ISO 17480 [1,2]. Patient information leaflets, training videos, personal explanations and a training video stored using QR codes were used to illustrate the required handling.
Target group tests with a total of 160 test participants highlighted that the use of QR codes linked to training videos was not accepted and thus no alternative to conventional communication channels such as instruction leaflets, training videos or personal explanations. Compared to the instruction leaflet, the training video and personal explanation achieved significantly better handling success and greater satisfaction with the application. Although only minor differences in satisfaction between training video and personal explanation could be observed, the test participants preferred the personal explanation. This effect is intensified with the complexity of the examined devices.
