25.06.2019Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration announced the creation of Project Facilitate. This pilot program facilitates access to innovative treatments for cancer that have not yet been approved by individuals who aren’t able to enroll in clinical trials. This move suggests that the FDA finds the approval process for cancer drugs to be too slow. At the same time, some experts want the FDA to slow down the approval process for cancer treatments. A recent article in JAMA Internal Medicine argued that cancer drugs are receiving accelerated approval without sufficient evidence proving they are safe and effective. (…)
25.06.2019An Oklahoma judge Monday approved Teva Pharmaceuticals’ revised $85 million settlement with the state over allegations the company helped fuel the nationwide opioid epidemic. Cleveland County District Judge Thad Balkman’s decision came after state legislative leaders argued an earlier agreement did not comply with new state laws. Teva had reached an agreement with the state of Oklahoma last month, just two days before the drugmaker was set to face a trial alongside Johnson & Johnson. (…)

24.06.2019Merck & Co Chief Executive Ken Frazier said on Thursday a rule to base the price the U.S. government pays for some prescription drugs in it Medicare program on lower prices in other countries would face legal challenges if adopted. U.S. President Donald Trump said last year that one way his administration would seek to lower drug costs to consumers could be through an international pricing index (IPI) that would determine what Medicare pays for certain medicines based on the prices set in a handful of other countries. A proposed version of the rule is expected in August. (…)

24.06.2019Thousands of working-age adults in Arkansas lost their Medicaid coverage as a result of new work requirements that failed to boost employment, according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday. The study from Harvard University researchers undermines one of the Trump administration's main arguments as it pushes states to enact new work mandates for Medicaid beneficiaries. The administration says that imposing the mandates will encourage people to find work and be self-sufficient, lifting them out of poverty. (…)

Parents looking for answers on the safety of vaccinations are led astray by fake news, hoaxes, as well as religious and cultural beliefs, and sometimes even threats of violence - which mean diseases once thought eradicated are making a comeback. (…)
